The engine performance is the same as in the lower trims, but the suspension and quicker steering make for a sportier drive. The F Sport Design is a sportier trim level in the UX lineup, but it’s primarily an appearance package. It has some luxury features of the Premium trim, like a power moonroof and rain-sensing wipers, while bringing sportier aesthetics. The standard powertrain in every UX 250h is a hybrid 4-cylinder rated at 181 horsepower, returning 43 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway.

Digital key, heated auto-dimming side mirrors with memory and auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink increase the F SPORT Handling experience for the driver in tangible ways. For 2023, the UX 250h F SPORT’s driving appearance and sportiness have been further enhanced through the expansion into the F SPORT Design and Handling packages. On the exterior, both models have F SPORT wheels, grille, dark roof rails, a black roof, power tilt-and-slide moonroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, fog and cornering lamps, automatic headlamp leveling and painted wheel arch molding. The F Sport appearance package includes stylish 18-inch wheels, color-keyed fender molding, LED fog lights and cornering lights, a unique front grille and bumpers, a black roof, and black roof rails.

Some features standard on the Premium trim are optional on the F Sport Design, which has the same starting price. These include a hands-free power liftgate, heated and ventilated front seats, and an auto-dimming mirror. The Premium trim has some of the same options as the base trim, like parking sensors and a head-up display. Additionally, you can get a heated steering wheel and a 12.3-inch infotainment system with navigation. It’s a subcompact SUV that’s competitive with the Volvo XC40 and BMW X1 but at a lower price.

However, the UX is the only hybrid of the bunch and thus returns significantly better fuel economy than all of them. Those seeking ample space for occupants and cargo are better off stepping up to the NX or RX. Cargo room measures out to 17.1 cubic feet and it seems like it could've been a bit larger.

Plus, that low-end hybrid torque at the rear wheels definitely makes it feel faster than it actually is. Between the UX's 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine at the front and two motor generators at the rear, output is rated at just 181 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque on 87 octane. That's … not a whole lot for this bulky hatch's 3,605-pound curb weight, but I was actually pleasantly surprised at its ability to hop it from a stop light. Lexus clocks its zero to 60 mph time at 8.4 seconds, but I was able to achieve around a second less with a little courage and letting the rear powertrain spin up before letting off the brake pedal. Lexus applied the human-centered craftsmanship approach to the 2022 UX to appeal especially to younger customers experiencing their first luxury vehicle. LED daytime running lights arranged in an arrowhead motif above the headlights complement the Lexus L-shaped lighting signature.
